Trump Evacuated After Gunfire at Press Dinne

Washington, D.C., United States

A dramatic security scare unfolded late Saturday night at the 2026 White House Correspondentsโ€™ Dinner when gunfire erupted near the main security screening area of the Washington Hilton Hotel, forcing President Donald Trump to be rushed out of the venue under heavy Secret Service protection.

The annual White House Correspondentsโ€™ Dinner, often referred to as โ€œNerd Prom,โ€ is one of the most high-profile political and media gatherings in the United States, bringing together top government officials, journalists, lawmakers, and members of the White House press corps. This yearโ€™s event quickly turned from celebration to chaos as reports of an armed suspect sent panic through the ballroom.

According to federal officials, the suspect approached the protected security perimeter carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Witnesses said the man moved aggressively toward the main checkpoint where Secret Service agents were stationed near the entrance to the ballroom. Authorities reported that he fired a shotgun near the checkpoint, prompting an immediate armed response.

President Trump had been seated at the head table when agents suddenly surrounded him and escorted him out within seconds. First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior administration officials were also quickly evacuated as guests inside the ballroom took cover under tables while armed officers secured the area.

One Secret Service agent was struck in a bullet-resistant vest during the confrontation. Officials confirmed the agent is expected to recover and said the protective vest likely prevented a far more serious injury. No fatalities were reported, and Trump was not harmed.

Authorities later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Investigators said he acted alone and there is currently no indication of additional suspects. He now faces multiple federal charges, including firearms offenses and assault on a federal officer. Officials have not yet confirmed a motive, though Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that Trump and other top officials were likely the intended targets.

The White House Correspondentsโ€™ Dinner was canceled shortly after the incident as law enforcement declared the hotel a crime scene. Organizers initially considered continuing the event, but security concerns led to a full evacuation. Trump later said the dinner would be rescheduled within the next 30 days.

Speaking afterward from the White House, Trump praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for what he called a โ€œfantastic job,โ€ describing the situation as shocking and serious.

The incident has renewed national attention on presidential security, especially because the Washington Hilton carries historical weight as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt against President Ronald Reagan. For many, Saturday night served as a reminder that even the most familiar public traditions can change in an instant.
