KYIV, UKRAINE
At least four people have been killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched another large-scale overnight barrage of missiles and drones across several regions of Ukraine, intensifying a campaign of long-range attacks that has placed renewed pressure on the country’s air defenses and civilian infrastructure. The latest strikes targeted cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, leaving damaged residential buildings, industrial facilities and public infrastructure as emergency crews worked through the night to rescue survivors and extinguish fires.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched a coordinated assault involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones. Air defense units intercepted 139 of the 169 drones fired during the attack, but several missiles and drones penetrated the country’s defenses and struck their intended targets. Officials said a number of locations were hit despite the interception efforts, highlighting the continuing challenge posed by Russia’s combination of missile and drone attacks.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that at least four people lost their lives in the strikes, while dozens of others suffered injuries ranging from minor wounds to serious trauma. In Kyiv, emergency responders searched damaged apartment buildings and cleared debris as residents assessed the destruction left behind. Kharkiv also reported fatalities and multiple injuries after overnight strikes, while officials in Zaporizhzhia confirmed additional damage to civilian infrastructure. Air raid alerts remained in effect for extended periods as authorities warned residents to seek shelter during repeated waves of incoming attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, saying they demonstrated the continuing threat facing Ukrainian civilians and renewed his appeal for additional air defense systems from international partners. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly argued that while existing Western-supplied defense systems have intercepted large numbers of drones and missiles, shortages of interceptor missiles, particularly for Patriot systems capable of destroying ballistic missiles have made it increasingly difficult to protect cities from sustained aerial assaults. Recent attacks have exposed those limitations, with officials acknowledging that ballistic missile interception remains a critical challenge.
Russia has continued to state that its strikes are directed against military and strategic infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s defense effort. Ukrainian authorities, however, maintain that many recent attacks have struck residential neighborhoods and civilian facilities far from active front lines, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction. The latest bombardment comes as fighting continues across eastern and southern Ukraine, where ground combat remains intense despite the growing emphasis on long-range missile and drone warfare.
The renewed attacks have once again drawn international attention as Ukraine’s allies continue discussions on military assistance and additional air defense support. Analysts note that Russia’s increasing use of coordinated missile and drone strikes is intended to stretch Ukraine’s defensive resources while maintaining pressure on cities well beyond the front lines. As rescue operations continue and investigators assess the full extent of the damage, the latest assault serves as another reminder that the conflict remains highly volatile, with civilians continuing to bear the consequences of a war that shows little sign of easing.
