A massive landslide in southwestern China has killed at least eight people and left dozens of others missing, after a mountainside collapse buried homes and triggered a major emergency rescue operation in Chongqing Municipality. Authorities said the disaster struck in Pengshui County, where rescue teams rushed to search through layers of earth and debris in an effort to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble.
The landslide occurred on July 17, 2026, in a mountainous area near the Wujiang River. Officials said a large section of the hillside suddenly collapsed, sending an estimated 18,000 cubic meters of rock and soil into the residential area below. More than 10 homes were reportedly buried or severely damaged, leaving local communities facing a devastating loss.
Emergency crews immediately launched a large-scale search operation involving firefighters, geological specialists, medical teams, and drone operators. More than 800 rescuers were deployed to the affected area, working under difficult conditions as unstable ground raised concerns about additional landslides. Authorities reported that several people had been rescued, while teams continued searching for the 34 residents still listed as missing.
The disaster prompted a rapid response from Chinese authorities, with President Xi Jinping ordering officials to prioritize rescue efforts, protect residents, and investigate the cause of the collapse. Emergency teams evacuated more than 1,100 people from nearby areas as a precaution, while officials monitored the surrounding slopes for signs of further movement.
Residents described a terrifying scene as the hillside gave way, with large amounts of earth and rocks moving quickly into the settlement. Some locals reported noticing warning signs before the collapse, including smaller rockfalls and unusual sounds from the mountain area. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the landslide, with investigations continuing into geological conditions, weather patterns, and other possible contributing factors.
The affected region of Chongqing is known for its steep mountainous landscape, where landslides are a recurring risk, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Across China, authorities have increased monitoring efforts for geological disasters as extreme weather events and changing environmental conditions continue to create challenges for communities living in vulnerable areas.
Power, water, and gas services were temporarily cut in parts of the disaster zone as a safety measure, while emergency shelters were established for displaced residents. Relief supplies, including food, medical assistance, and temporary housing materials, were sent to support those affected.
As rescue operations continue, families remain waiting for news about missing relatives. Officials have warned that difficult terrain and unstable conditions could slow recovery efforts, while the final impact of the disaster may become clearer only after search teams complete their work.
