Seattle: The University of Washington is making headlines in higher education once again, climbing four spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. The Seattle-based institution now sits at No. 42 among more than 400 national universities, a significant move that underscores its growing academic prestige.
In addition to its national rise, UW continues to earn global recognition. In the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings for 2025–26, UW holds an impressive No. 8 position worldwide and remains the second-ranked U.S. public university. These achievements highlight the school’s strength in cutting-edge research, international collaboration, and overall academic reputation.
On the domestic stage, UW also stands at No. 56 among national universities and No. 18 among public universities, according to the same report. In past years, UW has reached as high as No. 40 nationally and No. 15 among public institutions, making it the highest-ranked university in Washington state.

Critics also point out that rankings may not fully capture student life, inclusivity, or the broader mission of public universities.
