UN to vote on US-backed Gaza ceasefire resolution

UNITED NATIONS

The UN Security Council is preparing for a crucial vote on the U.S.-backed resolution aimed at securing a long-term ceasefire and reshaping Gaza’s future governance.

The U.S. proposal calls for an International Stabilisation Force, a temporary “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza’s administration, and a roadmap that eventually leads to Palestinian self-governance. Washington says the plan is designed to prevent renewed conflict and restore humanitarian access.

The draft has gained support from several regional powers, including Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Pakistan, and the UAE, who view the resolution as a structured path toward stability.

But the proposal faces strong resistance. Russia and China have circulated a rival draft seeking changes to key elements of the U.S. plan. On the ground, Hamas has rejected the initiative outright, calling it an attempt to impose foreign control.

Israel has also pushed back, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu objecting to any references to Palestinian statehood in the document.

Funding for reconstruction would run through a UN trust overseen by global financial institutions, while the stabilisation force would be authorised to use “all necessary measures” to enforce security.

The vote is expected soon, with intense negotiations continuing behind closed doors. Diplomats say the outcome could set the direction for Gaza’s political and security landscape for years to come.
