Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Oil Shipments to India

NEW DELHI

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged uninterrupted oil and fuel shipments to India, reaffirming Moscow’s position as a reliable energy partner despite international scrutiny. The announcement came during high-level talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where both leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade and cooperation.

Putin described Russia as committed to maintaining steady deliveries of crude oil, natural gas, and coal to meet India’s growing energy needs. He emphasized that the shipments will continue uninterrupted, a statement seen as a signal of Moscow’s pivot toward Asia amid Western sanctions and criticism.

The pledge comes as India continues to import significant quantities of discounted Russian crude, despite pressure from the United States and European allies. Washington has criticized these purchases, citing concerns that they indirectly support Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

In addition to energy, the talks covered a wide range of economic sectors, including fertilizers, critical minerals, and maritime logistics. Both nations signed agreements aimed at boosting bilateral trade in the coming years, with India seeking to diversify its energy sources while ensuring stability and affordability for its domestic market.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the guarantee, describing energy security as a key pillar of the India–Russia partnership. He also highlighted ongoing cooperation in defense, civil nuclear energy, and high-tech sectors, framing the engagement as a strategic effort to strengthen long-term ties.

Analysts note that the energy pledge serves both countries’ strategic interests: Russia solidifies a dependable market for its exports while India secures a stable supply of energy in a volatile global market. Critics, however, caution that continuing dependence on Russian oil could complicate India’s trade relations with Western nations and expose it to potential economic repercussions.

No immediate changes to pricing or shipment schedules were disclosed, but officials indicated that both governments would work to ensure that the supply chain remains stable and reliable. The announcement underscores the growing importance of Asia in Russia’s global energy strategy and India’s commitment to maintaining energy security amid shifting geopolitical landscapes.

The visit marks a milestone in India–Russia relations, demonstrating a willingness to pursue mutually beneficial agreements despite international pressures and highlighting the central role of energy cooperation in shaping diplomatic and economic partnerships.
