MP's Husband Arrested in London China Spying Probe

LONDON, UK

In a major national security investigation, British counter-terrorism police have arrested three men on suspicion of spying for China, including the husband of a sitting Labour Party lawmaker. The arrests were carried out under the National Security Act 2023, which criminalizes aiding a foreign intelligence service.

A 39-year-old man, identified in media reports as David Taylor, husband of Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid, was detained in London. Two other men, aged 43 and 68, were arrested separately in Wales. All three remain in police custody while authorities continue their investigation. Metropolitan Police confirmed searches were conducted at multiple properties in London, Wales, and Scotland as part of the inquiry.

Ms. Reid, who represents the East Kilbride and Strathaven constituency and serves on the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, issued a statement distancing herself and her family from the alleged conduct. She emphasized that she had โ€œnever seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any lawโ€ and confirmed she has no personal or official ties to China.

Police stated that, while the arrests are serious, there is currently no indication of an imminent threat to the public. They are investigating suspected cooperation with a foreign intelligence service believed to be linked to China. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing and further evidence is being collected.

The arrests highlight growing concern in the UK over potential foreign influence operations. Security Minister Dan Jarvis stated in Parliament that any proven attempts to interfere in British political and economic affairs will face โ€œsevere consequences.โ€ The government has previously warned of efforts by Chinese operatives to recruit personnel in the UK, though Beijing has dismissed such allegations as unfounded.

No formal charges have been filed at this time, and police have not suggested that other members of public office are involved. Authorities continue to question the suspects and examine evidence as the investigation progresses.
