Kathryn Hahn Cast in Tangled Reboot

LOS ANGELES, United States

Disney has officially confirmed that Emmy-nominated actress Kathryn Hahn will portray the villain Mother Gothel in the studioโ€™s upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film Tangled, marking a major casting announcement for one of Disneyโ€™s most anticipated remake projects.

The confirmation came on March 10, 2026, when Hahn revealed the role through a social-media video showing her wearing a shirt featuring images of Mother Gothel from the original animated film. Walt Disney Studios later shared the video online, confirming that Hahn would take on the iconic antagonist in the reimagined movie.

In the story, Mother Gothel is the manipulative villain who kidnaps the infant princess Rapunzel and raises her in isolation inside a tower so she can exploit the magical powers of the girlโ€™s long hair, which can heal and restore youth. The character was originally voiced by Broadway star Donna Murphy in the 2010 animated film.

Hahn will star alongside Australian actress Teagan Croft, who has been cast as Rapunzel, and Disney actor Milo Manheim, who will play Flynn Rider, also known as Eugene Fitzherbert. Disney announced the two lead roles earlier in January 2026 as the studio finalized the main cast for the remake.

The upcoming film will be directed by Michael Gracey, best known for helming The Greatest Showman, while the screenplay is written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose previous work includes Do Revenge and contributions to Thor: Love and Thunder.

Disneyโ€™s Tangled, released in 2010, was inspired by the classic German fairy tale โ€œRapunzelโ€ by the Brothers Grimm. The animated film became a global hit, earning more than $590 million at the worldwide box office and later expanding into a franchise that included a television series, a short film, and stage adaptations.

The new live-action version is part of Disneyโ€™s broader strategy of revisiting classic animated titles with modern reinterpretations, following projects such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid.

Before Hahnโ€™s confirmation, industry reports had suggested several actors were being considered for the role of Mother Gothel, including earlier discussions involving Scarlett Johansson, though those plans did not move forward.

Production for the film is expected to move ahead after the main casting announcements, though Disney has not yet announced an official release date for the live-action Tangled.

For Hahn, the role represents another high-profile villain performance following her widely recognized portrayal of Agatha Harkness in Marvelโ€™s television series WandaVision and the spin-off Agatha All Along, which helped establish her reputation for charismatic and theatrical antagonists on screen.

With its key cast now revealed, anticipation is building among fans eager to see how Disney will translate the lantern-lit fantasy world of Tangled into a live-action cinematic adventure.
