Authorities in Indonesia have issued urgent safety alerts after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores Island erupted, sending ash and volcanic debris soaring up to 16 kilometers into the sky. The eruption has prompted a tsunami warning and triggered immediate travel and evacuation advisories across the region.
The country’s geological agency confirmed that the eruption produced a massive ash column, raising concerns for nearby communities, aviation operations, and maritime routes. Officials have urged residents to avoid areas within 6 to 8 kilometers of the crater and to stay clear of rivers, valleys, and coastal zones that could be affected by lava flows, mudslides, or ashfall. Citizens are also advised to use masks or other protective equipment to guard against inhaling volcanic dust.
The eruption has sparked international alerts, with aviation authorities in Australia issuing a red alert for air traffic to warn of dangerous ash clouds that could disrupt flights.
