Authorities in Indonesia have issued urgent safety alerts after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores Island erupted, sending ash and volcanic debris soaring up to 16 kilometers into the sky. The eruption has prompted a tsunami warning and triggered immediate travel and evacuation advisories across the region.
The country’s geological agency confirmed that the eruption produced a massive ash column, raising concerns for nearby communities, aviation operations, and maritime routes. Officials have urged residents to avoid areas within 6 to 8 kilometers of the crater and to stay clear of rivers, valleys, and coastal zones that could be affected by lava flows, mudslides, or ashfall. Citizens are also advised to use masks or other protective equipment to guard against inhaling volcanic dust.
The eruption has sparked international alerts, with aviation authorities in Australia issuing a red alert for air traffic to warn of dangerous ash clouds that could disrupt flights. Japan and other neighboring countries have evaluated tsunami risks, monitoring potential sea waves generated by the eruption that could impact distant coastlines.
Disaster management teams remain on high alert, monitoring the volcano for further activity, including potential aftershocks or additional eruptions. Emergency response units are coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of residents, while maritime and port operations in nearby areas have been advised to take precautionary measures.
So far, no fatalities have been reported, but the eruption has highlighted the ongoing volcanic risks faced by Indonesia, home to more than 120 active volcanoes along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Experts caution that secondary hazards, including lahars and flooding, could follow especially if rainfall occurs in the affected region.
Authorities continue to stress that the situation is dynamic and volatile, urging locals and travelers to follow official guidance, stay informed, and avoid non-essential travel near the volcano. Emergency shelters and evacuation plans have been activated to protect those at greatest risk, as monitoring efforts remain continuous.
The eruption serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters and underscores the importance of rapid response, community preparedness, and international coordination in mitigating potential impacts from volcanic activity.
