Ministers from the world’s seven largest advanced economies, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, gathered in Montréal today for the 2025 G7 Industry, Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting. The summit, hosted under Canada’s presidency, focuses on global collaboration in artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and industrial competitiveness.
Canadian ministers Mélanie Joly and Evan Solomon welcomed their international counterparts, emphasizing the importance of strengthening supply chains, accelerating innovation, and building a resilient digital economy. The ministers are expected to discuss strategies for promoting responsible AI adoption, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and advancing digital infrastructure across G7 nations.
A key agenda item is the advancement of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on reducing barriers for SMEs and encouraging ethical, trustworthy AI development. Ministers are also addressing industrial competitiveness, including measures to secure supply chains against global disruptions, and fostering collaboration in emerging technologies such as quantum computing.
During the meeting, Canada and Germany announced the launch of a “Digital Alliance” aimed at deepening cooperation on AI, digital sovereignty, and next-generation technologies. Canada is also preparing to finalize a bilateral agreement with the United Kingdom, further strengthening international collaboration on technology and innovation.
Officials note that this gathering comes on the heels of the mid-year G7 leaders’ summit in Alberta, where leaders adopted a statement on AI for prosperity and outlined plans for quantum technology and critical minerals development. The Montréal meeting aims to translate those commitments into concrete actions and partnerships.
Experts highlight that outcomes from this meeting could have a significant impact on global technology adoption, supply-chain resilience, and industrial productivity. For SMEs, these agreements may lower barriers to adopting AI technologies and enable participation in advanced industrial networks.
As the meeting continues, G7 ministers are expected to issue a series of communiqués outlining commitments to collaboration on AI governance, digital infrastructure, and industrial growth, signaling a coordinated approach to navigating technological and economic challenges in the years ahead.
