LOS ANGELES, Sept 23 – Star Wars is heading back to the big screen. Lucasfilm has released the first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, giving fans a cinematic glimpse at the next chapter of Din Djarin and his young companion’s journey. The film, directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Lucasfilm, is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
The movie continues the story from Disney+’s acclaimed The Mandalorian series, which ran for three seasons. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, while the ever-popular Grogu known to fans as “Baby Yoda” once again takes center stage.
A Galaxy in Transition
The trailer sets the stage in the fragile post-Empire era, where the New Republic struggles to maintain order. Mando and Group are drawn into new conflicts involving scattered Imperial warlords. Action sequences feature AT-AT walkers, starship battles, and Grogu’s lighter, playful moments, balancing intensity with heart.
New Faces and Returning Favorites
The film expands the Star Wars universe with fresh characters. Sigourney Weaver debuts as Colonel Ward, a senior New Republic official, while Jeremy Allen White plays Rotta the Hutt, heir to Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. Familiar allies, including creatures and figures from Star Wars Rebels, also make appearances.
First Big-Screen Return Since 2019
The Mandalorian and Grogu marks Star Wars’ first theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Fans have long awaited a return to cinemas, and the trailer’s sweeping visuals and careful blend of nostalgia and novelty have already sparked strong buzz online.
Behind the Scenes
Written and directed by Jon Favreau, with creative input from Dave Filoni, the film aims to carry the grounded, character-driven style of the series into a full cinematic experience. Music will once again be composed by Ludwig Göransson, whose theme for The Mandalorian has become iconic in recent years.
Anticipation Builds
While some fans have raised questions about how the series’ intimate storytelling will scale up to the big screen, early reactions to the trailer highlight excitement at seeing Grogu and Mando in theaters for the first time. With its mix of action, adventure, and the franchise’s trademark emotion, The Mandalorian and Grogu is shaping up as one of 2026’s most anticipated blockbusters.
