The United States has completed a third round of military strikes against Iran, marking another significant escalation in an already tense confrontation that has unfolded over the past week. U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM, announced that the latest operation targeted approximately 140 Iranian military sites, saying the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as continued Iranian attacks threatening international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, the latest military action followed an attack on the Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy. U.S. officials said the vessel was struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, leaving the ship disabled by fire and resulting in one civilian crew member being reported missing. The United States said the incident represented another serious threat to commercial navigation through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways and required what it called a measured military response.
Military officials said the operation focused on infrastructure believed to support Iran’s offensive capabilities. The targets reportedly included missile launch sites, drone launch facilities, ammunition depots, communications systems, and other military assets that U.S. officials say have been linked to attacks on commercial vessels operating in the region. Earlier military actions reportedly targeted dozens of additional sites after previous attacks on commercial shipping. In its official statement, CENTCOM emphasized that the United States remains committed to protecting commercial shipping routes and maintaining stability in the region. Officials also said U.S. forces remain prepared to respond to any additional attacks against American personnel, partner nations, or civilian vessels operating in international waters.
Iran, meanwhile, has condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of further escalating regional tensions. In recent days, Iranian-linked military actions have reportedly included missile and drone attacks targeting countries that host U.S. military forces, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Oman. Those developments have heightened concerns that the confrontation could widen beyond its current scope.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the crisis. As one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, it serves as a critical passage for a substantial share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption to traffic through the narrow waterway has the potential to affect international energy markets, shipping costs, and global economic stability.
