ABUJA, NIGERIA
A joint military operation involving United States and Nigerian forces has resulted in the killing of a senior Islamic State figure described by American officials as one of the groupโs most important operational leaders, marking what both governments are calling a major counterterrorism success in West Africa.
The operation took place in Nigeriaโs northeastern Borno State near the Lake Chad Basin, a region that has spent years at the center of violent insurgencies linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, commonly known as ISWAP. According to statements released by U.S. Africa Command and Nigerian military authorities, the target of the raid was Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, an ISIS commander accused of overseeing international operations, recruitment efforts, financing networks, and the development of explosives and drone capabilities.
American officials described the mission as highly coordinated and based on months of intelligence gathering shared between Washington and Abuja. Reports indicate that Nigerian ground forces led portions of the operation while receiving support from U.S. military advisers and surveillance assets. Airstrikes were also reportedly used during the mission, with several additional militants believed to have been killed alongside al-Minuki.
U.S. President Donald Trump publicly praised the operation shortly after news of the raid emerged, calling it a โvery complex and meticulously planned missionโ that dealt a serious blow to ISIS leadership. Trump further described al-Minuki as one of the worldโs most active terrorists, adding that the strike had significantly weakened the groupโs operational capabilities.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also welcomed the outcome, framing it as evidence of deepening military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States at a time when extremist violence continues to destabilize parts of West Africa.
Still, even as officials celebrated the operation, some counterterrorism analysts urged caution regarding claims about al-Minukiโs exact rank within ISIS. While U.S. authorities referred to him as the organizationโs director of global operations and, in some cases, its second-in-command, several regional experts noted that ISIS leadership structures are often decentralized and difficult to independently verify.
The broader conflict in northeastern Nigeria remains severe despite years of military campaigns. Armed groups operating across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon have carried out attacks on villages, schools, military facilities, and civilians for more than a decade, leaving thousands dead and forcing millions from their homes.
For the United States, the operation also signals a growing military focus on Africaโs expanding extremist networks. American involvement in Nigerian counterterrorism efforts has increased steadily over the past year through intelligence-sharing programs, advisory missions, and expanded security cooperation.
While the death of al-Minuki is being presented as a strategic victory, officials and analysts alike acknowledge that militant organizations in the region have historically adapted quickly after leadership losses. Even so, the operation represents one of the most significant anti-ISIS missions carried out in West Africa this year and underscores the continuing international effort to contain extremist violence across the Sahel and Lake Chad regions.
