North Korea has fired five short-range ballistic missiles in a coordinated test that underscores its continued focus on expanding tactical strike capabilities, according to multiple international reports published between April 19 and April 20, 2026.
The launches were carried out near the country’s eastern coastal area around Sinpo, with all five missiles traveling toward the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast. Officials in South Korea and reporting from agencies including Reuters and the Associated Press confirm that the projectiles were identified as part of the Hwasong-11 series, a class of short-range ballistic missiles designed for battlefield use.
State media in North Korea reported that the test was personally overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, who has continued to play a visible role in weapons demonstrations. His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, was also present, reflecting her increasingly frequent appearances at strategic events.
According to verified details, the missiles were equipped with cluster-type warheads and fragmentation payloads, enabling them to disperse submunitions across a wide area. Reports indicate that the missiles struck a designated target zone approximately 136 kilometers away, covering an impact area estimated at around 12 to 13 hectares. Military analysts note that such payloads are intended to maximize area coverage and complicate defensive interception, while also raising concerns about unexploded ordnance risks.
This latest test marks the fourth missile launch by North Korea in April alone and the seventh recorded weapons test so far in 2026, reflecting a sustained pace of activity despite longstanding international restrictions.
