U.K. Police Arrest Man After A Car Hits Pedestrians In Derby

Derby, United Kingdom

It was a Saturday night in one of Derby’s most familiar streets, a stretch of bars, restaurants, and Georgian architecture that locals have walked for generations. Friar Gate was busy, as it tends to be on weekends, when at approximately half past nine in the evening, a black Suzuki Swift drove into a group of pedestrians, leaving seven people injured on the pavement and road. Some were described by witnesses as bleeding heavily. Others were attended to by strangers, members of the public and staff from nearby businesses who rushed out and began administering first aid before the ambulances even arrived.

Seven ambulances were dispatched, along with a Hazardous Area Response Team from the East Midlands Ambulance Service. The injured all seven of them were taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. None of the victims are in a life-threatening condition, which, given the eyewitness descriptions of the scene, is something authorities have acknowledged as fortunate. One witness described it as “absolute carnage,” saying people were lying on the pavement covered in blood. Another said simply: “I just can’t believe something like this has happened.”

What followed the attack was a fast, coordinated police response. Officers, working on eyewitness information provided by the public in real time, tracked the vehicle across the city. Just seven minutes after the incident, the suspect was stopped at Station Approach on the bridge crossing toward Pride Park on the other side of the city centre. Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred confirmed that the arrest was made safely and swiftly, crediting both her officers and the members of the public who immediately came forward with information.

The man now in custody is a 36-year-old Derby resident, originally from India, who had been living in the United Kingdom for a number of years. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as of Sunday.

Counter-terrorism officers have been brought in to assist with the investigation, a standard procedure for incidents of this nature though authorities were careful to clarify that this does not mean the attack is being treated as terrorism. Police say they are keeping an open mind on motive, and the investigation is ongoing.

The response from Derby’s civic and political community was immediate. Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson called herself “deeply shocked,” while the city council leader described feeling “horrified.” Derby County Football Club, whose stadium sits not far from the scene, expressed sadness and solidarity with those affected.

Friar Gate was sealed off and remained closed for a considerable period as forensic investigators worked through the night. Police are continuing to appeal for CCTV footage and any eyewitness accounts, asking anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift in the area around the time of the incident to come forward. The case reference is incident 1131 of March 28th.

A city that was simply going about its Saturday evening is now processing something it did not expect and for now, the answers to the most important question of all, why, remain with the investigation.
