Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a significant diplomatic visit to the Gulf region, holding high-level talks in the United Arab Emirates focused on regional security, defense cooperation, and the evolving threat posed by drone warfare. The visit, which was not widely announced in advance, forms part of a broader effort by Ukraine to expand its strategic partnerships beyond Europe at a time of shifting global tensions.
During meetings with senior Emirati leadership, including President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussions centered on strengthening cooperation in areas of defense and security. Officials familiar with the talks indicate that both sides explored ways to enhance protection of critical infrastructure, particularly against the growing use of drones and missile systems in regional conflicts.
Ukraine’s experience in countering such threats has become a key element of its diplomatic outreach. After more than two years of facing sustained aerial attacks, Ukrainian forces have developed practical and cost-effective methods to detect and intercept drones. These capabilities are now being shared with partners in the Gulf, where concerns have risen over Iran-linked drone activity and broader instability affecting the region.
As part of this cooperation, Ukrainian experts are already working alongside local teams, contributing technical knowledge and operational insights. Reports suggest that more than 200 specialists have been deployed across the region to assist in strengthening defensive systems. The collaboration is expected to deepen over time, with both sides considering longer-term agreements that could extend for several years.
For Ukraine, the visit also carries strategic importance beyond immediate security concerns. Kyiv is seeking to diversify its international relationships, looking toward the Middle East for investment, energy support, and potential access to advanced defense equipment. In return, it offers a unique form of battlefield-tested expertise that has gained increasing relevance in modern conflict environments.
The discussions in the UAE are part of a wider regional tour that includes engagements with other Gulf states, reflecting a coordinated approach to building alliances in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. Analysts note that this signals a shift in Ukraine’s global positioning from a country primarily receiving aid to one that is actively contributing to international security frameworks.

Both Ukraine and its Gulf partners are moving toward closer coordination, shaped by shared concerns over emerging threats and the need for adaptable defense strategies.
