Amazon has officially launched its next-generation artificial intelligence assistant, Alexa+, in the United Kingdom, marking its first major expansion into Europe and signaling a significant shift in how voice assistants operate in the era of generative AI.
The upgraded assistant represents the most substantial overhaul of Alexa in years, moving beyond simple voice commands into a more advanced, conversational system powered by large language models. According to company announcements and multiple reports, Alexa+ is designed to understand natural speech, maintain context across interactions, and complete complex multi-step tasks, such as booking reservations, managing schedules, or controlling smart home devices in a single request.
Amazon says the new assistant introduces what it describes as โagentic AI,โ meaning it can take actions on behalf of users rather than simply responding to prompts. It also includes personalized memory features, allowing the system to learn user preferences, routines, and habits over time to deliver more tailored responses.
The rollout in the UK is being conducted through an early access phase, with availability expanding gradually across compatible devices, including Echo speakers and Fire TV platforms. During this phase, the service is expected to be free for some users, while long-term pricing is anticipated at around ยฃ19.99 per month, with the possibility of inclusion in Amazon Prime subscriptions.
In addition to enhanced functionality, Alexa+ introduces customizable personality modes, including โBrief,โ โChill,โ โSweet,โ and โSassy,โ allowing users to tailor how the assistant communicates. While these features aim to make interactions more engaging and human-like, early reactions have been mixed, with some users praising the conversational improvements and others raising concerns about tone and reliability.
Initial data suggests increased engagement with Alexa-enabled devices following the upgrade, particularly in smart home usage and media consumption. However, reports also highlight technical challenges, including occasional mispronunciations and responses that are overly influenced by U.S.-centric context, indicating that further refinement may be needed for international users.
The launch comes as Amazon seeks to reinvigorate its Alexa ecosystem amid growing competition from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Googleโs Gemini. By transforming Alexa into a more capable, personalized assistant that operates across devices, apps, and web platforms, the company is positioning Alexa+ as a central hub for everyday digital tasks.
While the rollout marks a major milestone, Amazon has acknowledged that Alexa+ remains an evolving product, with additional features and improvements expected as the system expands to more users and markets in the coming months.
