DETROIT, United States
A violent attack at the Temple Israel near Detroit has triggered nationwide concern after an armed man rammed a vehicle into the synagogue building and opened fire, prompting a dramatic confrontation with security personnel that authorities say narrowly avoided a mass-casualty tragedy.
The incident occurred around 12:19 p.m. on March 12, 2026, when a suspect drove a pickup truck through the entrance of the synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit, before moving down a hallway and reportedly opening fire with a rifle. Security guards stationed at the building quickly engaged the attacker in a brief gunfight, bringing the threat to an end.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon. Officials said Ghazali died during the confrontation after the vehicle he drove into the building caught fire, though investigators initially said the exact cause of death was still being examined.
Law enforcement officials revealed that the attacker had packed the vehicle with fireworks and flammable materials, which ignited during the incident and filled parts of the building with heavy smoke. Bomb technicians and investigators were later sent to examine the truck after authorities discovered what appeared to be explosive materials inside.
Despite the severity of the attack, no worshippers or children inside the synagogue were killed or seriously injured. At the time of the incident, more than 100 children and staff members were present in the synagogueโs preschool and education center, and all were successfully evacuated as emergency procedures were activated.
One security guard was injured after being struck by the vehicle during the attack, while dozens of responding officers required medical treatment for smoke inhalation caused by the fire inside the building.
Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other federal agencies have described the assault as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, and a large-scale investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
Preliminary reports indicate the suspect may have been experiencing personal turmoil, including the recent deaths of several family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, though authorities emphasized that the motive remains under investigation.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident as antisemitic violence and praised the synagogueโs security team for their rapid response, stating the outcome could have resembled a far more devastating mass-casualty event if the attacker had reached the children inside the building.
The attack has intensified concerns about rising threats against religious institutions in the United States. Jewish organizations and law-enforcement agencies have since increased security measures at synagogues and community centers across several cities while federal authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While the investigation continues, officials and community leaders say the quick response from security guards and first responders prevented what could have become one of the deadliest attacks on a house of worship in recent years.
