TEHRAN, Iran
Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the countryโs new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, marking a historic and controversial leadership transition in the Islamic Republic during an escalating regional conflict.
Iranโs powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, announced the decision after an emergency session held under wartime conditions. The council voted to appoint the 56-year-old cleric as the new head of state, making him only the third Supreme Leader since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
The leadership change came just days after Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed during U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in Tehran, an event that dramatically intensified tensions across the Middle East and triggered fears of a broader regional war.
Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered an influential but largely behind-the-scenes figure within Iranโs political and religious establishment. Although he held no official government position before this appointment, analysts say he developed close relationships with Iranโs security institutions, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which plays a major role in the countryโs political structure.
The transition is historically significant because it marks the first time power in the Islamic Republic has effectively passed from father to son, a development that critics say resembles a dynastic succession in a system that originally emerged from a revolution against monarchy.
Iranian officials, however, have framed the appointment as a necessary move to maintain stability during a national crisis. President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed the decision, saying the selection reflects national unity and continuity at a time when the country faces intense military pressure and geopolitical threats.
International reaction has been swift and sharply divided. U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the appointment, reportedly describing Mojtaba as an โunacceptableโ choice and warning that Washington would continue to exert pressure on Iranโs leadership as the conflict unfolds.
The new leader now inherits power at one of the most dangerous moments in Iranโs modern history. Ongoing missile and drone exchanges between Iran and its adversaries have already shaken regional security, while global energy markets have reacted with sharp price increases amid concerns over disruptions to oil supplies.
As Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei now holds the most powerful position in Iranโs political system, controlling the armed forces, overseeing the judiciary, and shaping key decisions on foreign policy and nuclear strategy. Observers say how he exercises that authority in the coming weeks could significantly influence both the direction of the conflict and the future of Iranโs political system.
