MUSCAT
A senior Iranian official has arrived in Oman carrying what officials describe as a key nuclear message, signaling renewed diplomatic movement amid fragile and closely watched negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Ali Larijani, a veteran power broker in Iran’s political system and a senior security adviser, landed in the Omani capital on Tuesday for high-level talks with the country’s leadership. His visit comes as Oman once again positions itself at the center of indirect negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme, serving as a discreet intermediary between Iran and the United States.
Iranian state media reported that Larijani was received by senior Omani officials and is expected to hold meetings with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, the architect of Muscat’s quiet mediation efforts. While the exact contents of Larijani’s message have not been made public, diplomats say it is closely tied to recent indirect talks aimed at testing whether stalled nuclear diplomacy can be revived.
The visit follows a fresh round of behind-the-scenes discussions held in Oman in recent days, during which Iranian and U.S. representatives communicated through intermediaries rather than face-to-face. Iranian officials have described those talks as a way to “gauge seriousness” on both sides after months of diplomatic deadlock and rising regional tensions.
At the heart of the discussions is Iran’s nuclear programme and the long-running dispute over uranium enrichment and sanctions relief. Tehran has repeatedly insisted that its right to enrich uranium is non-negotiable under international law, while signaling conditional openness to technical measures such as limits on stockpiles or dilution of highly enriched uranium if sweeping economic sanctions are lifted. Larijani’s presence in Muscat is widely seen as an attempt to clarify Iran’s position at a senior political level and to convey Tehran’s response to messages passed through Omani channels. No timetable has been announced for a formal next round of negotiations, but diplomatic sources suggest Larijani’s visit is part of preparatory efforts to determine whether further talks are viable. Iranian media have indicated that additional regional consultations could follow, signaling that Muscat’s role may extend beyond this single visit.
For now, officials on all sides are keeping expectations measured. But Larijani’s arrival in Oman carrying a nuclear message at a moment of heightened uncertainty has drawn close international attention, seen as a potential signal that diplomacy, however fragile, remains on the table.
