NEW YORK
The United Kingdom has called for urgent discussions at the United Nations Security Council over Sudanโs deepening famine, warning that the country is sliding into a catastrophic humanitarian disaster as conflict continues to block aid and destroy food supplies.
British officials raised the issue after new assessments confirmed that famine conditions have expanded in parts of Sudanโs North Darfur region, with severe acute malnutrition reaching emergency thresholds in additional areas. London said the scale and speed of the crisis now demand immediate international attention at the highest level of the UN.
Sudan has been gripped by war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The prolonged conflict has devastated agriculture, crippled markets, and displaced millions of people internally and across borders. Aid agencies say entire communities are now surviving on minimal food, unsafe water and limited medical care.
According to UN-backed food security monitors, millions of Sudanese are facing extreme hunger, with famine already confirmed in several displacement camps and surrounding areas. Children and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable, as health systems have collapsed and malnutrition rates continue to climb.
In statements to the Security Council, UK representatives stressed that the famine is not the result of natural causes alone but is being driven by violence, restricted humanitarian access and the breakdown of basic services. Britain urged all parties to the conflict to allow unhindered delivery of aid and called on the international community to step up diplomatic pressure to protect civilians.
The UK also warned that continued inaction risks turning Sudan into one of the worst hunger crises in modern history. Officials described starvation being used, directly or indirectly, as a weapon of war, a charge echoed by several humanitarian organisations operating in the region.
The call for talks comes amid growing frustration over the Security Councilโs limited progress on Sudan. Previous attempts to push for ceasefires and stronger civilian protections have struggled to overcome political divisions among council members, leaving aid groups to operate in increasingly dangerous conditions.
Humanitarian agencies say time is running out. With fighting ongoing and access routes frequently cut off, they warn that famine could spread further in the coming months unless violence eases and large-scale assistance is allowed to reach affected populations.
The Security Council is now expected to consider the UKโs request for focused discussions on the famine. For millions of Sudanese civilians facing hunger and displacement, diplomats acknowledge that decisions taken in New York could prove critical in determining whether lifesaving aid arrives in time or whether the crisis continues to spiral.
