London Mayor Sadiq Khan has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging the UK government and international community to take far stronger action as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Speaking at a public briefing in London, Khan said the ongoing civilian casualties and the collapse of basic services in Gaza had reached “an unbearable and deeply distressing level,” warning that the crisis demands an urgent and united response.
The Mayor pressed national leaders to push for a full and lasting ceasefire rather than temporary pauses, arguing that only a complete halt to the violence would allow meaningful humanitarian assistance to reach the hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the conflict. Khan stressed that aid agencies on the ground are struggling to deliver food, water, fuel, and medical care, calling the conditions “a humanitarian disaster unfolding in real time.”
In addition to demanding immediate de-escalation, Khan urged the UK government to increase its humanitarian funding and support for relief groups operating in and around Gaza. He pointed to the scale of displacement, infrastructure destruction, and medical shortages as evidence that “words of concern are no longer enough.”
Khan also reiterated his longstanding position that the UK should formally recognise a Palestinian state, saying such a step is essential for rebuilding trust and laying the groundwork for a long-term two-state solution. According to the Mayor, political recognition would send a clear message that the rights and safety of Palestinians must be upheld alongside Israel’s security.
His comments come as public protests continue across London, with local communities calling for stronger diplomatic action and accountability. The Mayor acknowledged the growing frustration among Londoners, adding that the city’s diversity makes the humanitarian crisis deeply personal for many families with connections to the region.
While the national government has expressed support for increased humanitarian access, it has so far stopped short of endorsing a full, immediate ceasefire. Khan’s remarks add to the rising pressure faced by ministers as international organisations warn of deepening civilian suffering.
For now, Khan says his focus remains on amplifying Londoners’ concerns and pushing the government to adopt what he describes as “a more moral, practical, and urgent approach.” He emphasised that safeguarding civilian lives must be the top priority, and that every hour of delay worsens an already critical humanitarian situation.
