33-Day US Shutdown Continues; Trump Threatens Nigeria Aid

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA
The United States entered its 33rd day of the federal government shutdown, now stretching into its sixth week with no resolution in sight. The funding impasse began when lawmakers failed to agree on the 2026 budget, with Democrats insisting on healthcare subsidy extensions and Republicans, backed by President Trump, refusing to include them. As a result, hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain furloughed or unpaid, major agencies are operating at limited capacity, and programs like SNAP food assistance face serious disruption. Economists warn the shutdown could drain up to $14 billion from the U.S. economy if it continues.

Amid the domestic crisis, President Trump escalated international tensions by threatening to cut all U.S. aid to Nigeria over what he described as continued attacks on Christians. He went further, saying the U.S. might consider military action if Nigeria fails to stop the violence. Nigeria responded sharply, rejecting the allegations as inaccurate and stressing that its security challenges stem from a mix of insurgency, banditry, and communal conflict—not targeted religious persecution.

Despite the heated public exchange, U.S. and Nigerian officials have begun quiet discussions focused on intelligence sharing, diplomatic pressure, and potential sanctions. For now, both the prolonged shutdown at home and the diplomatic confrontation abroad remain unresolved, placing the administration under growing scrutiny both domestically and internationally.
