Dallas, TX — September 24, 2025
A deadly attack unfolded outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas early Tuesday morning, leaving one detainee dead, two critically wounded, and the suspected gunman dead from a self-inflicted wound. Authorities are calling the incident a targeted act of violence against federal agents.
The Attack
According to federal officials, gunfire erupted around 6:40 a.m. CDT as a detainee transport van was entering the secured sally port of the Dallas ICE facility. From a nearby rooftop, the shooter opened fire, striking three individuals inside the van. One detainee was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. No ICE personnel were reported injured.
The shooter, later identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, died by suicide before officers could apprehend him.
Evidence and Motive
Investigators recovered several shell casings from the rooftop sniper position. Disturbingly, at least one casing bore the inscription “ANTI-ICE,” suggesting the attack was ideologically driven.
Handwritten notes discovered in Jahn’s belongings revealed hostility toward the U.S. government and a clear intent to terrorize immigration enforcement officers. One note, according to investigators, read: “Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, ‘is there a sniper with armor-piercing rounds on that roof?’”
Further investigation found Jahn had legally purchased a bolt-action rifle in August. He had also downloaded documents listing DHS facilities and researched digital tools to track ICE personnel. Authorities say he appeared to have acted alone.
Federal Response
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly condemned the attack. Secretary Kristi Noem released a statement calling the shooting “a deliberate and dangerous assault on federal law enforcement.” She warned that escalating rhetoric against ICE officers can translate into violent acts.
Security has since been heightened at ICE offices nationwide, including in Houston and other major cities, as federal officials remain on alert for possible copycat incidents.
International Reaction
One of the critically wounded detainees has been identified as a Mexican national. Mexico’s foreign ministry has confirmed it is monitoring the situation and coordinating with U.S. authorities.
Broader Concerns
The Dallas shooting underscores rising concerns about threats to federal agents. Experts note that ICE and related agencies have increasingly become flashpoints in America’s immigration debate, sometimes making officers targets of violence.
For now, officials emphasize that the Dallas incident appears to have been a lone-actor assault. Still, the attack has prompted renewed questions about facility security and the safety of detainees during transport operations.
